Information and advice for travelling abroad
Travel vaccinations
We provide travel health advice and some travel vaccinations, for North Hyde Practice patients only.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel, please complete our online travel form.
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks prior to travel; for long trips please allow 8 weeks - One form must be completed for each person travelling. If you are unable to use the online form, you are welcome to ask reception for a paper copy, or to speak to the nurse for support.
When we receive your form, the nursing team will review it, and you will be contacted to book either a telephone or face-to-face appointment. This may take 5 to 10 working days. If you are unable to wait, you may choose to attend a private travel clinic. Private travel clinics operate independently of the NHS and charge for their services.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
Free vaccines available on the NHS
Not all travel vaccinations are available free on the NHS or at the practice, even if recommended for your travel destination. The following vaccines are available free on the NHS and provided by the practice for travelling:
- Polio (as part of a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio vaccine)
- Typhoid
- Hepatitis A
- Cholera
- Tetanus (as part of a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio vaccine)
These vaccines are provided free because they protect against diseases considered to pose a significant public health risk if introduced into the United Kingdom. For any additional travel vaccinations or recommended antimalarial medication, patients are responsible for arranging a consultation at a private travel clinic.
Submitting your form early gives us enough time to plan your care, order vaccines if needed, and ensure vaccines have sufficient time to take effect before you travel. If you cannot wait for an NHS travel appointment, you may choose to attend a private travel clinic.
Vaccines that are not free
Here are the travel vaccines you'll need to pay for that are not covered under the NHS:
- Hepatitis B
- Japanese encephalitis
- Meningitis
- Rabies
- Tick-borne encephalitis
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Yellow fever (only available from designated centres)
Costs vary depending on the vaccine and number of doses needed, so it's worth factoring this into your travel budget.
Late submission
If your Travel Risk Assessment form is submitted 5 weeks or less before travel, we will try to offer an appointment where possible. In some cases, only a telephone appointment may be available, and you will need to contact a private clinic if any vaccinations are needed.
If forms are submitted less than 2 weeks before travel, you may need to attend a private travel clinic for specialist advice and vaccinations. Your vaccine records can be seen any time using the NHS App, or contact the GP surgery to request a copy of your immunisation records.
